We heard about Money Waters before we got to SXSW. Somewhat of a southern rap media hero, he has been compared to Cee-Lo Green and Devin the Dude. When someone has been written about and praised as much as him, we tend to like to see what the hype is about.
So there we were at Dreams in Austin for SXSW 07. The crowd was a little thin as people were still filtering in. A palpable buzz went through the air when his name was announced. Money Waters was about to take the stage and the folks that had contented themselves to playing the back all the sudden began to make their way forward. So Robbie grabbed her weave and I grabbed my Afro and we made our way to the front also. And there he was with his energetic hype man Ol-Man.
He launched into his string of what we assume to be hits, because it seemed as if everyone in the venue knew the words to all of his songs frontward’s and backwards. At home on the stage and in front of a crowd, he immediately put everyone at ease with his down-to-earth demeanor as he rapped and gave shout-outs to other djs and performers present. The crowd particularly loved ‘Gotta Gar’ off of his latest release “Swalaggin” and ‘So I’ off of his critically acclaimed debut album “The Porch”.
There on stage to show him love and perform a song with him was Pkhsso of Dallas other phenom rap group PPT. The set was HOT! Money Waters showed that his press hype is well deserved.
