One of our favorite independent shorts so far this year is APP SAPIENS (viewable below in English subtitles) by director Ko Hyun-chang. It’s Sci-fi – social-political in all the right places. The thought of how connected we are to our technology will continue to be the stuff of dreams and great film-making. When we can become closer to our navigation avatars then our real life families the world can seem a strange place indeed. And an even stranger question arises when we think of the ghost in the machine…can they become close to us? Can they like us or dislike us and what does their coming-of-age look like and mean for us flesh and bloods?
Cinematic-ally this short is well-acted and directed. BAE, Yong-kun, as K is subtle and, ultimately, very moving as he adequately translates ‘regular-hard-working-and-hated-by-his-family-for-it’ guy onto the screen. I never once got tired of the actor’s facial expressions or trying to decode his inner emotions. APP SAPIENS‘ editing is tight and succinct adding perfect pitch to the film’s buildup and payoff. Without a moment to lose, Ko Hyun-chang’s script smoothly pulls you in and holds you captive while you try to figure out just what in the hell is really going on with that app.
When the network system in an old mining town breaks down, the country’s leading IT corporation, io Company sends its people down to check out the problem. However, the employees who took on the duty turn up missing. A video clip from an unknown source is wired and it shows the last minute of the missing employees. The company tries to stop it going on public and hires an IT specialist, K to investigate this incident. His job is to find out the cause of break-down and the source of the video.
“App Sapiens” showed at the 17th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (2013) – Fantastic Short Films 10 – (PIFAN).
