14 HOURS AHEAD by Koncept resets the hip-hop compass that has been swinging in the direction of mumble mouth repetitions lately. It’s all at once everything. Cerebral and non. If you hear me sayin “don’t hit my phone wit that bulls#it” you can thank Koncept who appropriately utters that line in his hook on ‘Adidas’ a song that attacks exs and fake folk.
The musicality of this 13 track body of work is not an issue. Beats? He’s got em. There’s no questioning the tight, robust production that sets the stage nicely for where he shines best. Lyrical pictures. I won’t wax poetic about his playful yet heartfelt utterances because you don’t wanna hear that. You just want the truth and I’m here to give it to ya. He’s got that wordplay. You’re ears and brain are safe here.
Thankfully Koncept’s stream of conscious yet conversational rhyme style feeds the need for getting close to the emcee. His authenticity comes across and makes you confident you’re listening to him and not a falsified persona. From time to time Mr’s voice kind of fades out in quiet punctuation when he completes a thought. The emcee’s push/pull cadence is filled with witticism that’ll make you stop, rewind and play again. Y’all remember those days right? When words were put together cleverly with just the right amount of flare? Show yo right.
14 HOURS AHEAD is raw, fresh and just plain good hip-hop. The Koncept pendulum swings back and forth between materialism and realism. Between not giving a single f*$# and giving many as on ‘Hug Someone’ and ‘Wait’.
You got dreams? ‘Almost’ and ‘Reloaded’ are the keep-goin-don’t-give-up tracks for you. I’m partial to his don’t give a damn side so ‘You Music’, ‘Evicted’ , ‘Never Again’ and ‘Boat’ suit me nicely. The music on ‘Overboard’ is a weird blend of country-hip-hop-gospel. Hell I don’t know…whatever it is…it’s strangely hypnotic as f&#!
One thing though. About his flow. At first listen it may seem like Koncept’s talking to himself, but he’s talking to us…or maybe both. It’s like we’re in his head and it’s quicksand-trampoline time. Sometimes he stings. Sometimes he soothes. As a result, 14 HOURS AHEAD is marvelously balanced.
Most importantly it survived the road test. The one where you ride around with the joint on straight play, not shuffle. The one where you don‘t have to fast forward past any songs that you’re not feelin. Well played Champagne Konny. Well played.
*Not so important but important side note for my ladies. Found you one. He’s a looker. I got y’allz back!*
*Important side note for the fellaz. I know my note to the ladies has no place in a hip-hop review. But I does what I want. Carry on*
