Book Review by: Melody Charles
Blingin’, flossin’, trickin’ and cheatin’ is how Kaeyla “Goldie” Dennis fought her way out of a hard-scramble life: however, in order for her to keep her head straight and her game tight, she’s forced to learn from emotional heartbreak and life-threatening danger, which makes Meesha Minks’ first book in the Real Wifeys’ series, ON THE GRIND, as addictive, powerful and action-packed as any so-called reality show.
Like the main characters from the other books in her Real Wifeys series, Get Money and Hustle Hard, Goldie is young, attractive and ambitious, trading in her teenaged hum-drum existence with her grandmother, Mama Bit, for the lavish life as Damion ‘Dyme” Gunners mistress. The entrepreneur keeps her laced with spending money, designer gear, a fly whip and promises of leaving his wife and daughter to make it official, but when her patience runs short and the present Mrs. Gunners finds out about the affair, Goldie is dropped on her @$$, put on blast and is forced into a new income stream: first as a high-end booster and then as a stripper who quickly expands into her own one-woman skin enterprise.
The side hustle is soon a legit business—Goldie’s Girls—- that keeps the cash coming in, but allowing herself to get caught up with one of her dancers’ boyfriends gets this mercenary madam a LOT more than she ever bargained for and she risks her life in the process: “I eased off the table, kicking the chair out of my way as I stood on my feet before them. I ached, My body and my soul was tired and in pain. I wanted to crawl under a bed and sleep …but f*** the dumb s***. Payback was a no-good b****…..”Take another step and I will burn your ass, m*****f***. F*****’ try me and see.”
Of all the protagonists, Goldie is the most cold-blooded and the most cocky, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a loyal friend and all-around crazy-cool chick that makes you cheer for her triumphs or root for the haters to watch her smoke and eat her dust. ON THE GRIND is as grimy, sexy and street-smart as Minks’ other works, and for those who can’t get with the program, Goldie’s mission statement is this: “I ain’t got time for a m*****f*** whining in my ear. The only thing on my mind is my money and how to make more of it.”
